Objectives: To investigate whether age-specific FSH concentration can be a predictor of the outcome of ovarian
stimulation in women undergoing in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET).
Methods: Between Jaunary 2007 and September 2009, women who had got IVF-ET were reviewed. Among them,
women with the laboratory values of basal FSH (<10 IU/L) within 3 months before IVF-ET were enrolled. A total
of 1232 women were recruited in the study. Patients were treated with GnRH agonist long or GnRH antagonist
protocols. All of them were stimulated with recombinant FSH (rFSH). They were categorized into 5 groups according
to age; Group 1 (¡Â30 years), Group 2 (31¢¦35 years), and Group 3 (¡Ã36 years). The number of retrieved
and mature oocytes and fertilized oocytes, and clinical pregnancy rate were analyzed.
Results: Younger age group had the results of significantly more oocytes and embryos, and higher pregnancy rate
(P=0.000; P=0.025 and P=0.033 respectively). In the subgroup analysis, women with lower basal FSH levels in
group II showed better outcome after IVF-ET (pregnancy rate, P=0.02).
Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that age-specific FSH testing can serve as a predictor of the oocyte
yield and pregnancy in women with normal basal FSH concentration undergoing IVF-ET.
